Learn More Frequent questions What is the peroneus longus muscle? The peroneus longus is the largest muscle in the lateral compartment of the leg, positioned superficially to the peroneus brevis. It plays a crucial role in foot movement and stability. Where does the peroneus longus muscle originate? The peroneus longus originates from the superior and lateral surfaces of the fibula. Its fibres converge to form a tendon that travels down towards the foot. What are the main actions of the peroneus longus? The peroneus longus is responsible for eversion and plantar flexion of the foot. Additionally, it supports the lateral and transverse arches of the foot. Which nerve innervates the peroneus longus muscle? The peroneus longus is innervated by the superficial peroneal (fibular) nerve. This nerve is essential for the muscle's function in foot movement. What is the blood supply to the peroneus longus? The peroneus longus receives its blood supply from the peroneal artery. This vascularisation is vital for maintaining the muscle's health and function. Rate This Article
